Ajman Police have announced a complete ban on the use of electric scooters of all types on public streets, in a move aimed at ensuring the safety of road users.
The decision follows last month’s advisory urging riders of e-scooters and two-wheelers to comply with traffic rules, warning against the use of unauthorised vehicles. The advisory was accompanied by a video highlighting common violations, including riding without safety gear, travelling against traffic, entering roads from exits, and crossing via pedestrian walkways.
Across the UAE, authorities have been stepping up awareness campaigns and enforcement to curb reckless riding. Abu Dhabi Police recently released a video showing three men in kanduras riding e-scooters in unsuitable areas, urging residents to stick to designated safe zones.
For some residents, the dangers feel all too real. Um Saeed, a long-time Jumeirah resident, recalled a near-miss while walking to the grocery store. “The rider came out of nowhere from between two parked cars. I barely had time to move,” she said.
In Dubai, a dedicated unit has been formed to monitor violations by cyclists and e-scooter riders, in collaboration between the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police.
