Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the launch of the Road Safety Film Festival, a new initiative encouraging university students to create short films that highlight the causes and dangers of traffic accidents.
The competition, which opened for submissions on April 7 and runs until July 14, 2025, aims to raise awareness around key road safety issues through the power of storytelling and film.
Open to university students aged 18 to 35, the contest allows individuals or teams of up to three members to submit original short films across three categories. Participants may enter multiple categories, provided all work is entirely student-produced.
Winners in each category will receive certificates of recognition and cash prizes, awarded to the top three entries per theme.
Ahmed Al Khzaimy, Director of Traffic at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, said the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to engage young people in promoting road safety.
“The competition aims to empower students to showcase their creativity and talent in producing impactful educational and awareness films that promote traffic safety within the community,” he said.
This year’s themes focus on three major road safety concerns:
- Sudden lane departures
- Driving distractions
- Unsafe use of bicycles and electric scooters
According to Al Khzaimy, the topics were selected based on recent traffic data that identified lane swerving and driver inattention as leading causes of fatal accidents. The growing popularity of bicycles and e-scooters also prompted the inclusion of soft mobility safety in the competition.
“RTA remains committed to fulfilling the objectives of Dubai’s Traffic Safety Strategy, which places a strong emphasis on raising awareness among school and university students,” Al Khzaimy added.
