Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in partnership with Dubai Airports, has launched a bridge expansion project leading to Terminal 1 at Dubai International Airport to ease congestion and cut journey times for passengers.
The upgrade will widen the bridge from three to four lanes, boosting capacity by 33% from 4,200 to 5,600 vehicles per hour. Built using an innovative steel-and-concrete system, the project will be completed without major traffic diversions on Airport Road.
This latest initiative builds on RTA’s wider Airport Street development, which has delivered new bridges, tunnels, and direct access routes between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Casablanca Street. Among the key upgrades are a direct bridge to Terminal 3 that bypasses traffic lights, improved links to Terminals 1 and 3, and additional lanes towards Al Garhoud Bridge.
Together, these improvements are designed to provide smoother access for the more than 92 million passengers who travelled through Dubai International Airport in 2024, ensuring faster, safer, and more convenient journeys.
