Residents and travellers across the UAE are facing a spell of atmospheric instability, as the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) forecasts heavy rainfall, dust storms and shifting winds over the coming days.
A deep low-pressure system moving across the Arabian Peninsula is driving the sudden change in weather. The system is expected to bring a major rain event, starting in the western parts of the country and reaching Abu Dhabi by late Thursday night.
By Friday afternoon, cloud cover is expected to spread to Dubai, the northern regions, Al Ain, and eastern areas, triggering widespread rain and unstable conditions that could disrupt travel, outdoor plans, and daily commutes.
Friday, December 19: Stormy and cooler
Friday will be the most severe weather day, with partly cloudy to overcast skies and the formation of heavy convective clouds.
- Moderate to heavy rain is expected across several areas
- Thunder, lightning and isolated hail are possible
- Sharp drop in temperatures
- Strong winds up to 65 km/h, causing blowing dust and sand
- Reduced visibility on roads
Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution, plan journeys in advance and avoid wadis, which may be prone to flash flooding.
Saturday, December 20: Conditions improve gradually
By Saturday, the weather system will begin to move out of the country.
- Heavy rain will ease
- Scattered showers may continue in northern and eastern regions
- Winds will shift to northwesterly, remaining moderate to fresh
- Gusts could still reach 45 km/h, keeping dust levels elevated
The afternoon is expected to be clearer than the morning, though sea conditions will remain rough, especially in the Arabian Gulf.
Sunday, December 21: Calmer weather returns
Sunday will bring more stable conditions, with low clouds in the western coastal areas and a slight chance of drizzle.
- Sunshine expected across most regions
- Rising humidity Sunday night into Monday morning
- Possible mist formation in internal western areas
- Winds easing to around 40 km/h
- Seas are becoming moderate to slight, particularly in the Oman Sea
Residents are advised to stay informed about official weather alerts and take necessary precautions during periods of unstable weather conditions.
