UAE weather alert: Rain, thunder and possible hail this week

Published

Unstable weather is set to hit parts of the UAE this week, with the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) warning of rain showers, thunder, lightning and even small hail in some areas, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday.

The unsettled conditions are linked to low-pressure systems moving in from the south and the northward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Moist air from the Arabian Sea and Sea of Oman, combined with rising daytime temperatures and the eastern mountains, is creating the perfect setup for convective clouds.

What to expect:

  • Rainfall of varying intensity, mainly over eastern, southern and some internal areas.
  • Occasional lightning, thunder and small hail.
  • Dust and sand storms in exposed areas due to strong winds, reducing visibility.
  • Southeasterly to northeasterly winds, turning fresh to strong during cloud activity.
  • Slight to moderate sea conditions in the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

Residents are advised to take caution while driving in rain or poor visibility, avoid valleys during heavy downpours, and stay updated on NCM alerts.

Get ready for a mix of sunshine, clouds, and a slight dip in temperatures this weekend, according to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM).

Friday:
Expect clear to partly cloudy skies, with some cumulus clouds forming over the eastern areas in the afternoon. Temperatures will gradually drop, but humidity will increase at night and early Saturday morning, especially in western areas, bringing a chance of light fog. Winds will be light to moderate, occasionally picking up dust, with speeds ranging from 10 to 25 km/h and reaching up to 40 km/h. The Arabian Gulf will see moderate waves, while the Sea of Oman will remain calm to moderate.

Saturday:
The weather will stay mostly clear to partly cloudy, with eastern clouds again in the afternoon. Humidity will return overnight and into Sunday morning in some western areas. Winds will remain moderate to occasionally strong, stirring dust. Seas will be calm to moderate, though the Arabian Gulf could turn rough on Sunday morning.

Sunday:
Cloudier conditions are expected in eastern and southern regions, with a chance of rain showers. Winds will stay light to moderate but may stir up dust during the day. Seas will be rough at times in the Arabian Gulf before calming to a moderate level.

Monday:
The new week will begin with clear to partly cloudy skies, though some eastern and southern areas may see more clouds. Winds will stay moderate, occasionally active, with seas ranging from calm to moderate in both the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

Spread the love

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has forecast a chance of rain in different parts of the UAE starting Thursday and continuing until Sunday.

According to NCM, the weather change is due to an eastern surface low-pressure system combined with an upper-level high-pressure system.

  • Thursday: Mostly clear to partly cloudy skies, with clouds building up in the eastern and southern areas that could bring showers. The conditions may turn humid in some regions at night, with chances of fog or light fog.
  • Winds will blow from the southeast to northeast at speeds of 10–25 km/h, reaching up to 40 km/h with clouds, causing blowing dust at times. The sea will remain light to moderate in the Arabian Gulf and calm in the Sea of Oman.
  • Friday/Saturday: Conditions will stay similar, clear to partly cloudy skies, with cumulus clouds forming in the east and south, bringing a chance of rain. Coastal and inland areas may see humid nights and early mornings with fog or light fog.
  • Winds will remain light to moderate, occasionally picking up with the clouds. Seas will stay calm to light in both the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

Residents are advised to stay updated with official forecasts and take precautions while driving in foggy or dusty conditions.

UAE weather alert: Rain, thunderstorms and dust expected, says NCM

Published

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has warned of unstable weather conditions across parts of the UAE until Thursday, with forecasts pointing to rain, thunderstorms and dust storms in some areas.

The unsettled spell is linked to the movement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) – a belt of low pressure that causes warm, moist air to rise, often resulting in thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and cloudy skies. The ITCZ is currently extending northwards over the Arabian Peninsula, drawing moist air from the Arabian Sea and the Sea of Oman into the country.

Rain, thunder and rising temperatures

Daytime temperatures are expected to rise in the coming days. However, the NCM said the combination of heat and humidity, particularly over the eastern mountain ranges, will lead to the formation of convective clouds. These clouds are likely to produce rainfall of varying intensity, at times accompanied by lightning and thunder.

The weather activity will primarily affect eastern and southern areas, but may extend into internal regions during the forecast period.

Strong winds and dust

The NCM warned that southeasterly to northeasterly winds will blow across the country, ranging from moderate to fresh, and may become strong in areas experiencing convective cloud activity. These gusts could raise dust and sand, reducing horizontal visibility in some parts.

Residents are advised to exercise caution, particularly on roads in areas where dust storms or rainfall reduce visibility.

Sea conditions

Despite the unsettled weather on land, sea conditions in both the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman are expected to remain slight to moderate, according to the forecast.

Seasonal weather pattern

The ITCZ is a narrow belt of low pressure near the equator where winds from both hemispheres converge, often leading to unstable conditions, thunderstorms, and heavy rain. Its northward extension towards the UAE during the summer months is not unusual, but it can bring short periods of intense weather activity.

The NCM said it would continue to monitor developments and urged the public to follow official updates and avoid spreading unverified weather reports on social media.
