The UAE is set to resume air travel with Syria, according to a statement issued by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) on Monday.

The announcement marks a significant step in restoring connectivity between the two nations, as efforts are currently underway to complete the necessary technical and regulatory procedures required to relaunch commercial flights. 

The GCAA confirmed that joint coordination is in progress with its Syrian counterparts to facilitate the resumption of air traffic in a way that enhances travel and trade.

“This move comes as part of the UAE’s commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and fostering connectivity that supports economic and humanitarian exchange,” the authority said in a statement.

Once operational, the reinstated air routes are expected to significantly ease passenger movement between the UAE and Syria while also boosting cargo traffic and trade flows. The return of direct flights will offer a convenient travel option for thousands of residents and nationals with ties to Syria, as well as business professionals and logistics operators.

Although specific details regarding flight schedules, routes, and airline operators have yet to be announced, the GCAA noted that updates would follow once final approvals are granted and logistics are confirmed.

The development follows a broader trend of regional engagement and reflects the UAE’s efforts to rebuild diplomatic and economic bridges across the region.

Airlines operating in the UAE are expected to reveal individual plans to service Syrian destinations, subject to regulatory clearance and market demand.

In a bold move to strengthen its presence in the UAE, India’s popular budget airline, IndiGo, is launching daily direct flights from Mumbai and Kannur to Fujairah, starting May 16. This marks Fujairah as IndiGo’s fifth destination in the UAE, joining the airline’s already popular routes to Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah.

Along with the new flights, IndiGo is introducing dedicated shuttle bus services to connect Fujairah with the Emirates of Dubai and Sharjah, allowing travellers to explore multiple destinations from a single entry point.

Enhanced Connectivity

This new addition brings IndiGo’s weekly flights between India and the UAE to a total of 275. The airline will operate:

• 14 weekly flights to Fujairah
• 21 weekly flights to Ras Al Khaimah
• 28 weekly flights to Sharjah
• 104 weekly flights to Abu Dhabi
• 108 weekly flights to Dubai

IndiGo has carefully coordinated flight schedules to align with bus transfers, ensuring smooth connections for passengers traveling across the Emirates.

Regional Expansion

The airline’s growing footprint in the UAE reflects its ambition to offer affordable travel options across the region. With more than 90 destinations within India and 132 worldwide.

Etihad Airways is expanding its footprint in Pakistan with a new route to Peshawar, aligning with the UAE’s introduction of a five-year multiple-entry tourist visa for Pakistani nationals, a move expected to boost travel and tourism ties between the two countries.

Starting September 29, 2025, Etihad will launch direct flights between Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi and Bacha Khan International Airport in Peshawar, making it the airline’s fourth non-stop route to Pakistan, after Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore.

The UAE’s five-year visa, recently announced by Ambassador Hamad Obaid Ibrahim Salem Al Zaabi, is seen as a significant step in facilitating easier travel for Pakistani tourists and families, especially with expanded flight options now in place.

Etihad will operate the Peshawar service with its Airbus A320 family aircraft, offering eight Business Class and 150 Economy seats. The route will begin with five weekly flights and increase to daily service from November 22, 2025.

“We are thrilled to further expand our presence in Pakistan with the launch of our daily service between Abu Dhabi and Peshawar. This new route reflects our commitment to providing vital connectivity for travellers between Pakistan and the Gulf, Africa, Europe, and North America,” said Antonoaldo Neves, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways.

Etihad is also ramping up operations to Karachi, increasing frequency to 17 flights a week starting October 1. The Peshawar launch follows the addition of Addis Ababa to the network and marks Etihad’s 16th new destination in 2025, alongside new routes to Prague, Warsaw, Algiers, Tunis, and Atlanta.

The carrier is also increasing frequencies to major European hubs including Paris, Milan, Manchester, Frankfurt, Zurich, and Madrid.
