We’re on par with ICC elite panel standards: Simon Taufel on DP World ILT20 officiating excellence

The DP World ILT20 continues to grow as the region’s premier tournament, not just for players but also for match officials. With the competition bringing together top-tier talent from around the world, ensuring high-quality officiating is just as crucial as the performances on the field. Australian umpire Simon Taufel, a five-time ICC Umpire of the Year, led the DP World ILT20 Season 3 match officials panel. Taufel has been instrumental in mentoring and guiding the officiating team with an aim of raising the standard of umpiring within the tournament.

Highlighting the significance of the DP World ILT20 and his role within, Taufel said, “This tournament is about growing cricket in the United Arab Emirates, and officiating is part of that objective. My role is to support the umpires, referees, and the officiating landscape here by helping create a pathway for their development and giving them access to international standards, just like the players.”

Officiating Standards at DP World ILT20

Ensuring high-quality officiating requires constant evaluation and benchmarking against global standards. Taufel provided insight into how the umpires have performed in the tournament, revealing impressive accuracy rates. “On average in this tournament, umpires have gotten 92% of their decisions right. Players only get their reviews right 22% of the time, while umpires make the correct initial decision 92% of the time. If you asked coaches and players whether they’d be happy with 9 out of 10 correct decisions, most would say yes. The ICC elite panel average is around 92-93%, which shows we are on par with that standard”, he concluded.

The Passion of UAE Officials

Match officials from the UAE, including the likes of Shiju Mannil, Akbar Khan, and Asif Iqbal played a crucial role in the tournament. Taufel was particularly impressed by their eagerness to develop their skills and adapt to the high standards of international officiating.

He said, “The passion of the officials here is like that across the subcontinent—they are incredibly enthusiastic and eager to learn. They aspire to officiate on television at the international level, and they are extremely coachable. One of our key efforts this year is to provide them with more resources to support their development. It requires significant investment and effort, particularly in performance management.”

Building on this, he explained the structured approach taken to ensure the progress and assessment of umpires, “We provide all our match officials with match-day reports for every game. I did 17 matches, and Roshan Mahanama also did 17. After each match, we compiled reports on the two on-field umpires and the third umpire—that’s a substantial amount of feedback and information.”

He further added, “We also created a development structure around the pre-tournament phase. We have a preparation day with the officials, covering playing regulations, interpretations, culture development, teamwork, and support on and off the field. It’s a lot of work, and most people don’t see that. But it’s what you do when no one is watching that makes you successful.”

The Role of Specialist TV Umpires and DRS

The DP World ILT20 has embraced the Decision Review System (DRS) to assist in ensuring accurate decision-making. For the second consecutive season, specialist TV umpires, including Paul Wilson and Leslie Reifer, were assigned to process reviews efficiently. Speaking on the significance of this role and the pressures that it brings on on-field umpires as well, Taufel remarked, “I think we all enjoy the theatre and drama of seeing a decision reviewed on the big screen. One of the key aspects we’ve introduced in this competition is specialist TV umpires who can process DRS reviews quickly and efficiently. For an umpire, having a decision dissected in front of thousands at the venue and millions watching at home can be an embarrassing experience. They have to process that instant feedback and refocus immediately, which requires immense mental strength. In fact, most of our game is mental, 99% of it.”

As a trainee reporter and creative lead, I focus on curating engaging content and managing the social media presence for the company. I aim to connect audiences with relevant, impactful news through multiple digital platforms.

Total Chess has unveiled an accomplished broadcast team and a new dedicated highlight show for its upcoming pilot event in Budapest, bringing together some of the most recognised voices in chess to deliver comprehensive coverage of the competition.

Renowned chess creator and International Master Levy Rozman, popularly known as GothamChess, will lead the newly developed Total Chess Highlight Show, serving as its principal presenter. The show will feature player interviews, conversations with special guests, analysis and coverage of the tournament’s defining moments and emerging storylines.

The tournament’s main broadcast will feature an experienced presenting and commentary team comprising Anna Rudolf, Fiona Steil-Antoni, David Howell and Jovanka Houska. In addition to her broadcast role, Rudolf will report directly from the venue in Budapest, offering viewers behind-the-scenes access, exclusive on-site content and a closer look at the players and personalities shaping the competition.

The Total Chess World Championship Tour pilot, taking place from November 10–20, 2026, at the Anantara New York Palace Budapest Hotel, will bring together 24 of the world’s leading chess players for a unique competition across Blitz, Rapid and Fast Classic formats. With reigning world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen among the leading contenders, the event will showcase an innovative format that brings together the world’s best players to compete across three time controls, laying the groundwork for the Tour’s inaugural season in 2027.

Speaking about his involvement, Rozman said: “Chess is entering an incredibly exciting new era, and I’m thrilled to be part of the very first Total Chess Pilot event in Budapest. We’re bringing together the world’s best players, intense competition, and a completely new way of telling the stories behind the games. With our daily highlights show, we want to go beyond traditional chess coverage — bringing fans closer to the players, the rivalries, the drama, and the personalities that make this game so special. It’s going to be entertaining, unpredictable, and a lot of fun. I can’t wait!”

The introduction of the Total Chess Highlight Show marks a new dimension in the Tour’s content strategy. Led by Rozman, the show will complement the main tournament broadcast with a personality-driven format featuring interviews with competing players, guest appearances, discussion of the tournament’s biggest stories and analysis of the moments that matter most. The aim is to offer fans a deeper connection with the players and the narratives unfolding throughout the event.

Anna Rudolf, who will combine her broadcast responsibilities with on-site coverage from Budapest, said:

“I’m so excited to be the on-site host of the upcoming Total Chess event in Budapest — Magnus Carlsen will be challenged by the world’s very best, to prove who is the strongest at all three different time controls in chess!”

She added, “A Tour that brings Magnus Carlsen back to compete in a new format that tests the very best across three time controls? What else can we ask for! The Total Chess Tour, and the pilot event starting this November, is an absolute must to follow. I’m so honoured to bring the viewers all the action from Budapest together with my buddy Levy Rozman (aka GothamChess).”

Kjell Madland, CEO of Norway Chess and Founder of Total Chess, said:

“Total Chess is about more than determining who is the strongest player across three time controls. We want to create a global chess property that brings the game closer to audiences everywhere, combining world-class competition with compelling storytelling and fresh perspectives. Our main broadcast will bring together an outstanding team of experienced presenters and commentators, while the Total Chess Highlight Show, led by Levy Rozman, will give fans a fresh and engaging way to follow the tournament’s biggest stories and personalities. The Budapest pilot is an exciting milestone as we build towards the inaugural Total Chess World Championship Tour season in 2027.”

Together, the main broadcast and the Total Chess Highlight Show reflect the Tour’s ambition to develop a comprehensive viewing experience that appeals to established chess fans while engaging a broader global audience. By combining live tournament coverage and expert commentary with dedicated storytelling, player access and post-match insights, Total Chess aims to bring the intensity and personalities of elite chess to viewers around the world.

Conceptualised by Norway Chess and sanctioned by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the Total Chess World Championship Tour is a new global chess property designed to identify the world’s most complete chess player across three time controls — Fast Classic, Rapid and Blitz. The Budapest pilot will serve as a test event for the format and broadcast offering ahead of the Tour’s inaugural global season, planned for March 2027.

With an elite international field, an innovative competitive format and two complementary video products, the Budapest pilot marks an important step in Total Chess’s ambition to redefine how the world’s best chess players compete — and how audiences experience the game.

About the format
The Total Chess World Championship Tour Pilot introduces a ground-breaking competition format designed to identify the world’s most complete chess player by combining Fast Classic, Rapid and Blitz into a single championship. The pilot event will bring together 24 elite players, who will begin the tournament in a group stage comprising four groups of six players each. Every group follows a double round-robin format over five days, with players contesting ten Fast Classical games (45 minutes plus a 30-second increment). Victories earn three points, while draws are worth one point. A nine-round Blitz Swiss tournament held before the competition determines tie-break rankings.

Following the group stage, players progress into knockout brackets based on their finishing positions. Each knockout match is played over two days and tests competitors across all three disciplines—four Blitz games (3+2), two Rapid games (15+10) and one Fast Classical game (45+30)—with weighted scoring rewarding success in longer formats.

The four highest-ranked players across the Tour qualify for the Grand Final, where semifinals and the championship match determine the inaugural FIDE World Combined Champion. Should a knockout match remain tied, an Armageddon game is used to decide the winner, ensuring every contest produces a definitive result. The format rewards consistency, versatility and excellence across every major discipline of elite chess.

President Faye opens Africa’s first Youth Olympic Games in a celebration of colour

There are the numbers: 2,650 athletes, 204 National Olympic Committees, 153 medal events. And there is what people will remember from the first Youth Olympic Games ever held in Africa: a burst of colour, from Diamniadio to Saly.

On Saturday 31 October, Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye declared the Games open before 50,000 spectators at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio. On the field, 1,115 artists and performers, including 628 dancers, celebrated Senegalese culture and African heritage. For the first time, a Refugee Olympic Team is taking part in the Youth Olympic Games.

A host nation that dresses its Games

Senegal chose its palette with care. The mascot Ayo, unveiled a year earlier by President Faye alongside IOC President Kirsty Coventry, comes in vivid colours. The medal ceremony outfits, by Senegalese designer Abdou Lahad Gueye, feature touches of traditional woven cloth. In Senegal, textile is a language of its own.

In a country that dresses its Games so carefully, it is fitting that the host has a colour of his own. As the Presidency of the Republic of Senegal has noted, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s favourite colour is orange.

From Barcelona to Diamniadio

It is a rare personal note from a head of state who seldom talks about himself, and whose own story with the Olympics began as a spectator. In August 1992, aged twelve, he watched the Barcelona Games in his home village of Ndiaganiao. Thirty-four years later, he opened the first Olympic Games ever held on the continent. “Authentic Senegal! What a people! What a culture!” he wrote the day after the ceremony.

After the celebration, the legacy

Competition continues until 13 November in Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly. Dakar 2026 is the first edition of the Youth Olympic Games to achieve full gender parity, with 73 women’s events, 73 men’s events and seven mixed events. The President wants the momentum to outlast the Games: “In our country, sport has remained a passion. I want it to become an economy,” he told Le Soleil on 21 October.

Al Marjan Island hotel project sold to DAMAC for reported fourfold return on equity

A hospitality development on Ras Al Khaimah’s Al Marjan Island was sold to DAMAC in 2024 in a transaction that generated a fourfold return on invested equity, according to a press release issued by Zenith Group.

The development was undertaken by Three Musketeers Hospitality, a wholly owned subsidiary of Plus Holding Ltd, co-founded by Dubai businessman Hari Shankar Tibrewal, chairman of Zenith Group.

According to the release, the company secured a beachfront site on Al Marjan Island and signed an agreement with Marriott International in May 2023 to develop the Le Méridien Al Marjan Island Resort & Spa.
The proposed resort was to feature approximately 350 rooms and suites, seven restaurants and lounges, a spa, swimming pool and other leisure facilities, with an opening originally scheduled for 2026.
The investment came during a period of rapid growth in Ras Al Khaimah’s property market, driven partly by the announcement of Wynn’s multibillion-dollar integrated resort on Al Marjan Island. Land values on the island rose by approximately 65 per cent in 2023.
The venture subsequently sold the project to DAMAC in 2024 rather than proceeding with construction. Zenith Group said the transaction generated a return equivalent to four times the equity invested, although the release did not disclose the original investment or sale consideration.
“We entered Al Marjan Island early, added value by bringing in Marriott, and sold when the right offer came,” Tibrewal said in the statement.
The sale came as major developers increased their exposure to Ras Al Khaimah, where tourism-related investment and demand for waterfront property have attracted growing interest.
According to Zenith Group, the decision to sell reflected a strategy of realising returns after securing the land and hospitality partnership, rather than committing additional capital to construction.
The release did not provide details of the project’s subsequent development plans following the reported sale.
