Motorists battling daily congestion at the Al Wasl–Umm Al Sheif intersection in Dubai can expect smoother journeys soon. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has confirmed plans to add a second eastbound lane at the busy junction, aimed at reducing waiting times and improving traffic efficiency.

The upgrade is part of RTA’s ongoing road development projects across the emirate. In recent months, the authority has widened arterial routes and adjusted signal timings in other high-traffic areas to ease bottlenecks.

Officials said the expansion supports Dubai’s rapid urban growth, enhancing safety, traffic flow, and connectivity between residential neighbourhoods, schools, and new developments.

Abu Dhabi Police has reminded motorists that they must come to a complete stop at least five metres away when a school bus activates its side-mounted stop sign arm. The rule applies to drivers approaching from both directions to ensure students can cross the road safely.

Penalties for violations

  • Fine: Dh1,000
  • 10 traffic points
  • All violations will be detected electronically

Rules for school bus drivers
To avoid traffic disruption, bus drivers must follow these guidelines when using the stop arm:

  • Stop directly in front of a student’s home (unless blocked by construction or obstacles).
  • Avoid stopping at public bus stops on highways or major roads, which are unsafe for students.
  • Do not activate the stop arm while a student is still inside the home.
  • Misuse of stop arms, such as activating them in prohibited areas, may allow other drivers to contest violations.

Both drivers and bus operators must strictly follow school bus safety rules to protect children and ensure smooth traffic flow across the emirate.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in partnership with Dubai Airports, has launched a bridge expansion project leading to Terminal 1 at Dubai International Airport to ease congestion and cut journey times for passengers.

The upgrade will widen the bridge from three to four lanes, boosting capacity by 33% from 4,200 to 5,600 vehicles per hour. Built using an innovative steel-and-concrete system, the project will be completed without major traffic diversions on Airport Road.

This latest initiative builds on RTA’s wider Airport Street development, which has delivered new bridges, tunnels, and direct access routes between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Casablanca Street. Among the key upgrades are a direct bridge to Terminal 3 that bypasses traffic lights, improved links to Terminals 1 and 3, and additional lanes towards Al Garhoud Bridge.

Together, these improvements are designed to provide smoother access for the more than 92 million passengers who travelled through Dubai International Airport in 2024, ensuring faster, safer, and more convenient journeys.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in partnership with Keolis–MHI, has completed a major overhaul of wayfinding signage across all Dubai Metro stations, aiming to make daily journeys simpler and more intuitive for millions of commuters.

The initiative covers both the Red and Green lines and includes the installation and replacement of nearly 9,000 signs, a project that required more than 11,000 work hours. From clearer platform indicators to improved exit signs, the changes are designed to streamline movement within stations and help passengers reach their destinations faster.

Hassan Al Mutawa, Director of Rail Operations at RTA’s Rail Agency, said the upgrades were part of RTA’s ongoing strategy to enhance public transport services. “The plan was designed to modernise signage, improve passenger flow, and make commuting easier and more seamless,” he explained.

Among the highlights:

  • Brighter exit signs: Station exits are now marked with bold yellow boxes for better visibility.
  • Floor stickers & platform guides: These direct commuters towards the correct train lines, easing congestion during peak hours.
  • Cabin-specific markers: Prominent pink and gold boards have replaced older floor markings, making it clearer where Women & Children and Gold Class cabins are located.
  • Etiquette reminders: Stickers across stations now encourage passengers to follow proper transport etiquette, fostering a more comfortable travel environment.

To ensure consistency, updates were also integrated across RTA’s digital platforms, including mobile apps, train and platform announcements, and social media channels.

The enhancements are part of RTA’s wider commitment to making the Dubai Metro not only a backbone of urban mobility but also a commuter experience that is smooth, efficient, and world-class.
