Why delivery bikes in Dubai suddenly have number plates at the front

If you spot delivery bikes in Dubai with number plates at both the front and the back, here’s why.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has approved a new rule requiring front number plates for motorcycles and e-bikes used in corporate delivery services. Until now, these vehicles only carried a rear plate.

The change will take effect by the end of December and will be rolled out gradually, beginning with vehicles renewing their licences.

According to the RTA, the move is part of a wider set of joint safety initiatives with Dubai Police, aimed at improving regulation, visibility, and enforcement for delivery riders on the roads.

Ahmed Mahboob, CEO of RTA’s Licensing Agency, said the rule applies specifically to motorcycles operating in the delivery sector. These bikes will now carry two plates, one at the front and one at the rear, featuring a gold background, black lettering, and a special code “9” to clearly identify them as delivery vehicles.

The plates will be issued under a new unified number, different from the previous plate. They will be introduced progressively during licence renewals or in cases where plates are damaged or lost.

The requirement does not apply to private motorcycle owners. It is limited to bikes and e-bikes used for:

  • Parcel, document and message delivery
  • Order management and delivery services
  • App-based transport and delivery platforms
  • Rental motorcycles and e-bikes are used for delivery work

The announcement follows earlier measures regulating where delivery riders can operate on Dubai’s roads. Under existing rules, delivery motorcycles are not allowed in the left-most fast lanes on major roads, with restrictions varying depending on the number of lanes.

Together, these steps aim to boost road safety, strengthen enforcement, and improve the identification of delivery riders, as Dubai continues to manage the rapid growth of app-based delivery services across the city.

Dubai is rolling out a major set of family-focused benefits, offering free parking, transport discounts, and fee exemptions to support Emiratis and strengthen family life across the city.

Under a new partnership between the Ministry of Family and Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), senior Emiratis will soon enjoy free parking and reduced public transport fares. The move is part of the wider ‘Family First’ programme, aimed at easing daily costs and improving quality of life.

Even more significantly, People of Determination will receive sweeping benefits. These include exemptions from Salik toll fees, parking charges, public transport fares, and even vehicle registration and renewal costs.

Additionally, they will benefit from 50 per cent discounts on taxi fares and driver licensing fees, making mobility far more accessible.

Students are also included in the initiative, with discounted public transport rates, helping families manage education-related expenses.

Officials say the initiative aligns with the National Family Growth Agenda 2031, which focuses on building stronger, more sustainable communities by putting families at the center of planning.

Sana bint Mohammed Suhail, Minister of Family, emphasised that cities prioritising families are better positioned for long-term, balanced development. Meanwhile, Mattar Al Tayer of the RTA highlighted that the collaboration will help shape future transport systems and urban spaces around family needs, reinforcing Dubai’s reputation as a global leader in human-centred planning.

More initiatives announced

As part of the broader Year of Family efforts, the RTA has also introduced a range of community-driven initiatives:

  • Mass weddings for Emirati employees
  • Support for home-based businesses
  • A mobile nursery bus for working mothers on Fridays
  • Digital content promoting Emirati family values and culture
  • Special nol cards dedicated to the Year of Family

Additionally, the RTA continues to expand inclusive services:

  • Dedicated Metro and Tram cabins for women and children
  • Thousands of student nol cards issued
  • Hundreds of driving licences granted to People of Determination
  • Ongoing support services benefiting hundreds of families

This latest move signals Dubai’s continued push toward creating a more inclusive, supportive environment, where families, accessibility, and quality of life take centre stage.

In a move designed to strengthen healthcare in the UAE, authorities have made it easier for medical teachers to work in healthcare sector, without compromising on safety or standards. The licensing requirements for some health graduates have also been eased.

So, what’s changing?

Doctors and professors who teach in universities can now practise in the healthcare sector more easily, bringing their knowledge directly into real-world patient care. This means students learn from professionals who are actively working in the field, not just teaching from textbooks.

Officials say this is a win-win. Patients benefit from high-level expertise, while students gain hands-on learning and exposure to real cases.

The update is part of a bigger plan to modernise the system and make it more flexible, while still keeping strict rules in place to ensure quality and patient safety.

It also helps fresh graduates in nursing and allied health fields enter the workforce faster, supporting hospitals with more skilled professionals.

Authorities say the UAE’s strong digital systems and coordination between government entities are helping make these changes smoother and quicker to implement.

This step brings education and healthcare closer together, helping build a stronger, more skilled workforce while improving patient care across the country.
