FA investigates after flares let off during Community Shield – ARN News Centre

England’s Football Association (FA) has launched an investigation after flares were let off during Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield on Saturday.

Goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez helped Liverpool win the season’s curtain-raiser at Leicester’s King Power Stadium, where red smoke covered the field of play at times.

“We are aware of incidents during the FA Community Shield where flares were used in the stands. The use of smoke bombs or pyrotechnics in a football stadium is dangerous, illegal and could have severe consequences,” the FA said.

“We can confirm that we are investigating the matter and will be working with the relevant authorities, the clubs and the police to identify the individuals involved and we will take appropriate action.

“We expect the club to also investigate these incidents and to implement the new rules where applicable.”

The FA, Premier League and Football League last week announced stricter sanctions for pitch invasions and the use of smoke bombs and pyrotechnics, and announced automatic club bans for the offences.

Alcaraz stunned by Dimitrov at Miami Open – ARN News Centre

Carlos Alcaraz’s hopes for a Sunshine Double came undone in spectacular fashion as the top-seeded Spaniard fell 6-2 6-4 to Grigor Dimitrov, who will move on to face Alexander Zverev in the Miami Open semi-finals.

It was a crushing defeat for Alcaraz, who arrived in Miami full of confidence after lifting the Indian Wells title 11 days ago but fell three wins shy of becoming the first man to clinch the Sunshine Double since Roger Federer in 2017.

“Overall, to win against him, you have to play at your best. That’s just how it is,” Dimitrov said after his second victory over world number two Alcaraz in as many meetings.

“I came into the match focused and I think it was extremely clear what I had to do.

“Sometimes simplicity is genius. It’s very hard to do it, especially when you play against an opponent like that, but I was able to dictate the game, read the game a bit better than the last time.

“Overall, a very great match on my end and I’m just happy I finished in straight sets.”

Up next for Dimitrov is German fourth seed Zverev, who overcame tricky conditions to beat Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan 6-3 7-5 in the day’s first match on the Stadium court.

“We have limited time to celebrate, to get ready to prepare. Right now the most important thing is to prepare for the match,” added the 12th-ranked Dimitrov, who can climb into the top 10 with a victory.

“Very grateful to be that far into a Masters event and I’m very excited for what’s next.”

Zverev attacked Marozsan’s serve and converted three of his seven break-point chances, swatted aside the two break points he faced and won 80 per cent of his first serve points en route to the last four in Miami where he has yet to drop a set.

Despite not dropping a set in windy conditions, Zverev had his hands full with Marozsan, who is making his Miami debut and enjoyed top-10 upsets over Holger Rune and Alex de Minaur on the way to the quarter-finals.

“If he continues playing like that he’s going to rise up the rankings very quickly and he’s going to be one of those (top 10) guys himself,” Zverev said in his on-court interview.

“When we are in control, I think all top players when they are in control they feel like they can manage the match, manipulate the match a little bit in their own favour.

“But against him that’s not possible. That’s why he has such a great top-10 record and he’s an unbelievable player.”

Zverev’s win, sealed with a break when he unleashed a brilliant backhand down the line, marked his return to the Miami Open semi-finals for the first time since his runner-up finish in 2018.

Wolff puts Verstappen top of Mercedes’ list to replace Hamilton – ARN News Centre

AFP

Max Verstappen would be top of Mercedes’ list of possible replacements for seven times Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton in 2025 if available, according to team boss Toto Wolff.

The triple world champion has a contract with Red Bull until 2028 but his future at the team has been clouded by a breakdown in relations between his father Jos and principal Christian Horner.

Mercedes are losing Hamilton at the end of the season to Ferrari, with Sunday’s Australian GP winner Carlos Sainz losing his seat.

“We have a slot free, the only one in the top teams — unless Max decides he goes and then the slot is not going to be free with us anymore,” Wolff told Fox Sports Australia in an interview in Melbourne.

The interview, conducted after qualifying, was not widely picked up at the time but the strong comments drew attention later.

Asked if Verstappen would be the number one pick, Wolff replied: “Yes. You see what his performance levels are but I wouldn’t want to discount the other ones too.”

Wolff tried to sign Verstappen as a teenager before he joined Red Bull but Wolff could not offer him an F1 seat immediately.

The Austrian said he had a good relationship with Jos Verstappen and had met at the time in Vienna to discuss future possibilities but the driver had already an offer from Red Bull at that point.

“It’s a kind of relationship that needs to happen at a certain stage, but we don’t know when,” he said when asked if signing Verstappen could close a circle.

Wolff also mentioned double world champion Fernando Alonso, Sainz and Mercedes-backed F2 rookie Kimi Antonelli as possible options.

“Obviously there’s Fernando, who’s very exciting, and Carlos, very good. So there’s a few ones,” he said.

Verstappen has not ruled out a move to Mercedes in the long term but said in Australia he was comfortable at his “second family” Red Bull and it would be a great story to finish his F1 career with them.

Once-dominant Mercedes failed to win a race last season and suffered a double retirement in Melbourne, their first since 2018.

Hyderabad set new IPL record for highest total in 31-run win over Mumbai – ARN News Centre

AFP

Sunrisers Hyderabad hit the highest total in Indian Premier League (IPL) history on Wednesday, posting 277-3 against Mumbai Indians, setting the stage for a 31-run win.

Hyderabad surpassed the previous record of 263-5, set by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013, propelled by Heinrich Klaasen’s unbeaten knock of 80 runs from 34 balls which included four boundaries and seven sixes.

Travis Head (62) scored his half-century in 18 balls, a franchise record for the fastest 50, before Abhishek Sharma (63) scored his in 16 balls.

Mumbai started the chase well, but the five-time champions fell well short, posting 246-5. Hyderabad, who lost their opening game to Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday, secured their first win of the season, rising to third place in the points table.

Mumbai, who have lost both their matches so far, are ninth in the league.
