Dubai is making it easier and faster for commuters to choose public transport. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is rolling out six new dedicated bus lanes spanning 13km, bringing the total length of these priority lanes to 20km across the city.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said the expansion is expected to:
- Increase bus ridership by 10%
- Improve bus arrival times by 42%
- Cut journey times by 41%
- Ease traffic congestion
“These lanes are part of our plan to make public transport a more attractive option for daily commuters,” he added.
Smarter buses, better service
RTA revealed some impressive stats for 2024, showing how AI and smart systems have made a big difference in how buses operate across Dubai:
- 88% of the emirate is now covered by the bus network
- 1,390 buses operate daily on 187 routes
- Buses complete 11,000 trips daily, covering around 333,000 km
- Over 500,000 riders use the bus service every day
- In 2024, the number of bus users hit 188 million – an 8% increase from 2023
RTA also introduced:
- 9 new express routes
- 9 new metro link routes
- 4 new taxi routes in busy areas
Plus, by activating a bus priority system at traffic lights, arrival times on key intersections improved by up to 12%.
More connections, less congestion
The goal is to make public transport not just convenient but the preferred choice. “We’re working to seamlessly link bus services with the Dubai Metro, improving access between residential, business, and industrial zones,” Al Tayer said.
