At least 17 flydubai flights scheduled for Friday between Dubai and several Iranian cities, including Tehran, Shiraz and Mashhad, have been cancelled, according to the Dubai Airports website.
The cancellations come as Iran experiences a nationwide internet blackout, which began on Thursday and continued into Friday. Authorities have reportedly restricted access as protests linked to economic hardship spread across the country.
A flydubai spokesperson confirmed that flights to Iran on Friday were cancelled, adding that the airline is “continuing to monitor the situation” and will adjust its flight schedule as needed. No specific reason was given for the disruption.
The impact has not been limited to flydubai. Turkish media reported that Turkish Airlines cancelled 17 flights, while AJet suspended six services, and Pegasus Airlines also cancelled flights to Iranian destinations on Friday.
Flight disruptions were also reported in other parts of the region. At least two flights between Doha and Tehran were cancelled, according to Hamad International Airport’s website.
Iran has seen nationwide protests since late December, driven by rising living costs and economic pressures.
Passengers travelling to or from Iran are being advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates before heading to the airport.
