Stay safe on the roads with these essential driving tips

Published

on

The wet season has arrived in the UAE, bringing light to moderate rainfall across the country. While the cooler temperatures are welcome, wet roads can create hazardous driving conditions. Authorities have issued safety warnings, urging motorists to take extra precautions. The Met Office has forecast rain, humidity, and rough seas in several regions.

To ensure a safe journey during rainy weather, follow these essential driving tips:
Stay Alert and Focused
Always remain vigilant and anticipate potential mistakes from other drivers.
Avoid distractions—do not use your mobile phone or adjust the radio while driving.
Keep both hands on the steering wheel and your eyes on the road at all times.

Use Lights Correctly
Drive with headlights on low beam; high beams can reduce visibility in wet conditions.
Avoid using hazard lights unless there’s an emergency or extremely poor visibility.

Check Your Vehicle’s Condition
Brakes: Ensure they are in top condition. Wet roads can make them less effective, so have them inspected if you notice squeaking or reduced responsiveness.
Tyres: Check tyre tread and air pressure—worn-out tyres increase the risk of skidding.
Windshield Wipers: Replace hardened or worn-out wiper blades to maintain clear visibility.

Drive Cautiously in Wet Conditions
Avoid flooded areas and valleys, as water levels can rise quickly.
Reduce speed to improve traction and control. Wet roads make it harder to stop suddenly.
Keep a safe following distance to allow enough reaction time in case of sudden stops.
Prevent windshield fogging by adjusting cabin air settings to allow fresh air circulation.
Avoid sharp turns, sudden braking, and overtaking, as they increase the risk of skidding. If your vehicle starts to lose control, reduce speed gradually and stay on course—avoid sudden steering movements.

By following these guidelines, motorists can navigate the wet weather safely and reduce the risk of accidents. Stay cautious, drive responsibly, and keep an eye on weather updates for changing road conditions.

Residents in certain regions of the UAE can anticipate a respite from the heat, as the National Centre of Meteorology forecasts periods of rainfall over the next few days. From Monday, August 5, to Thursday, August 8, the weather is predicted to be partly cloudy to cloudy across much of the country, with a likelihood of rain, particularly in the eastern and southern areas.

As per the NCM, during this period, the UAE will be affected by the extension of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and its movement towards the country over the surface from the south and upper-level pressure systems from the east, accompanied by the flow of clouds towards the country.

Winds are expected to be light to moderate and fresh at times, blowing from the southeast to northeast, becoming northwesterly at times, with convective clouds causing blowing dust and sand. This will in turn would reduce horizontal visibility.

Dust and rain predicted this weekend in UAE

The Met department has issued adverse weather advisory for different parts of the UAE, warning motorists of reduced visibility due to dusty conditions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and a possibility of rain in some areas.

The National Centre of Meteorology shared a map with yellow and orange alerts, indicating where dust was expected. The change in the weather pattern is due to strong Southwesterly to Northwesterly winds causing dust and sand to be suspend in the air.

The winds are also expected to kick up dust and sand during the day, getting stronger with the cloud activity. Western areas like Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and western parts of Dubai will be affected the most.

A NCM official told Gulf News that those who suffer from allergies should take precautions while outdoors. The weather bureau stated that the eastern parts of the country will experience light rainfall from Friday to Sunday with skies clearing up by Monday.

Cloudy skies associated with rain, especially in the eastern and western regions such as Fujairah and Abu Dhabi are also expected, the official added. Such conditions are expected till Sunday, a NCM statement said.

Temperatures are expected to remain hot on Thursday, with maximum temperatures hitting low to mid 40s. The maximum humidity is expected to reach 95 per cent.

From Friday till Sunday dusty and hazy skies are expected with a decrease in temperature, the official said. The NCM official also warned the public about rough conditions at sea. “People should avoid activities near the beach and at the sea due to rough conditions,” he said.
