Sharjah Ruler buys Dh4.5m worth of books from SIBF

Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has allocated Dh4.5 million for the acquisition of the latest publications presented by 2033 Arab and international publishers during the ongoing 42nd edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair.

This initiative aims to furnish the public and government libraries in the Emirates with a diverse range of literary content. This endeavour is deeply rooted in His Highness’s vision to bolster the publishing industry in the region and worldwide, thereby strengthening the prospects and success of publishers.

Concurrently, it seeks to broaden the knowledge resources accessible to the communities of Sharjah and the UAE, encompassing readers, researchers, and students. Furthermore, it underscores the pivotal role of libraries in shaping a knowledge-based society and enhancing their contributions towards achieving a comprehensive and sustainable cultural renaissance.

Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority, expressed, “The grant from His Highness is a continuation of Sharjah’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the publishing industry and enrich both public and government libraries. The support offered by the Sharjah Ruler each year enables publishers to continue to grow and expand. It also updates Sharjah’s libraries with new releases across genres of science, knowledge and literature, which enables them to better serve their members and visitors and continue fostering a knowledge-based society”.

She added, “SIBF has evolved into a holistic event that encompasses vital roles of book promotion, marketing as well as the enhancement of culture and knowledge-related activities. It has also emerged as a global platform that empowers publishers to overcome challenges through support, training, awards, and other resources. All these contributions have further solidified Sharjah’s appeal as a preferred destination for regional and international professionals in the book industry. Furthermore, the emirate’s libraries have become go-to destinations for students and researchers, owing to the wealth of knowledge and diverse range of books and publications they offer.”

The grant signifies a renewed commitment to support government and private libraries in the emirate, encompassing various scientific and literary disciplines in multiple languages. Each year, it enriches the libraries with thousands of new titles, further solidifying Sharjah’s reputation as one of the leading cities supporting initiatives for knowledge-based societies, actively contributing to the advancement of scientific research and the creation of substantial content.

Sharjah Police has launched a new awareness campaign aimed at reducing home burglaries and vehicle theft across the emirate.

The initiative, titled Your Belongings Are Your Responsibility, is being carried out in partnership with Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority as part of broader efforts to strengthen public safety and encourage community vigilance.

Focus on prevention and awareness

Authorities say the campaign is designed to remind residents that simple precautionary measures can significantly reduce theft risks.

The awareness drive encourages people to:

  • Properly secure homes and doors
  • Lock vehicles at all times
  • Avoid leaving valuables visible inside cars
  • Stay alert and report suspicious activity

Multilingual awareness messages

As part of the rollout, safety messages will be shared through multiple communication channels to ensure they reach a wide audience across Sharjah.

The campaign will also include:

  • Outreach targeting workers’ accommodations

New survey shows strong quality of life in Dubai

Life in Dubai continues to rank highly among residents, with 95% saying the city is their preferred place to live, according to the latest survey by the Community Development Authority.

The findings from the 2024–2025 Social Survey paint a picture of a city where happiness, safety and social connection remain key strengths, with overall life satisfaction reaching 8.72 out of 10.

A city that people are proud to call home

The survey shows that 96.4% of residents feel proud to live in Dubai, while the overall happiness score stands at 8.6, reflecting strong confidence in the quality of life across the emirate.

For expats, who make up a large share of the population, these figures highlight Dubai’s continued appeal as a place to live, work and build a future.

Family and community at the core

Strong family ties remain a defining feature, with the Family Bond Index exceeding 95%, while 84% of residents say they have someone to rely on in times of need.

Community engagement is also growing, with volunteering rates rising to over 13%, signalling a shift towards a more connected and socially active population.

Inclusive and connected living

The survey points to broad inclusivity across society:

  • Over 90% of People of Determination feel integrated
  • Similar levels report access to education and essential services
  • Nearly 99% of residents have internet access at home

Happiness among senior citizens also remains high, at nearly 87%, reflecting support across different age groups.

Shaping future policies

Officials say the results support the goals of the Dubai Social Agenda 2033 and the UAE’s Year of the Family, with a focus on strengthening social cohesion and wellbeing.

According to Hessa bint Essa Buhumaid, the survey serves as a key tool to guide policy, helping authorities respond to evolving community needs.

The UAE has marked a major national milestone, as leaders paid tribute to the country’s Armed Forces on the 50th anniversary of their unification, recognising their role in shaping the nation’s security and stability.

President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan praised the “courageous men and women” who continue to safeguard the country, describing their dedication as a source of pride for everyone who calls the UAE home.

In a message shared on X, he highlighted the significance of the anniversary as a defining moment in the country’s history, reflecting on five decades of service and commitment.

Cornerstone of national unity

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, also marked the occasion, praising the Armed Forces for their decades of service, sacrifice and national duty.

In a speech commemorating the 50th anniversary of unification, he highlighted the role of the Armed Forces in strengthening the UAE’s global standing and protecting its achievements.

He described them as an “impregnable fortress” that has safeguarded the nation’s pride, dignity and stability, while honouring the dedication of those who have served since unification in 1976.

“We gather today to celebrate the golden jubilee of the decision to unify the UAE Armed Forces,” he said, reflecting on a milestone that continues to shape the country’s security and unity.

Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and Chairman of the Presidential Court, described the Armed Forces as the nation’s “shield and backbone,” honouring generations who have contributed to protecting the country and its people.

Rulers of Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah also paid rich tributes to the Armed Forces.
