A pact has been signed by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) with US firm Cruise to supply driverless vehicles. These will ply as cabs on Dubai roads in 2023.
By 2022-end, trials and preparations of digital maps required for autonomous vehicles will start.
There are plans to launch driverless taxis in Dubai next year. By 2030, RTA said the fleet of autonomous taxis will be 4,000.
Cruise’s autonomous cars emit zero emissions, do away with human driver error with zero accidents, and have no parking problem.
Cruise will set up a new company in Dubai which will take care of the deployment, operation and maintenance of the driverless cars.
To request a ride, customers can use a mobile app. Customers will control the experience. Radio station settings will be sent to the vehicle before they board the cab.

There will be touch screen tablets inside the vehicles. These will help in giving real-time status information about the ride to the customers. These tablets will ask passengers to ensure all doors are shut and the seat belts have been fastened. To communicate with remote support personnel, the customers will only have to press of a button. To deboard, they will have to press another button and end the ride
