Say goodbye to the hassle of pulling out your laptop and liquids at airport security. Dubai International Airport (DXB) is rolling out next-generation screening systems that allow passengers to breeze through security without removing electronics or toiletries from their hand luggage. Thanks to cutting-edge technology from Smiths Detection, the upgrade promises faster, smoother, and smarter travel experiences.
Global threat detection specialist Smiths Detection has been awarded a major contract by Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP) to install its Model-S scanners across all terminals at DXB. These state-of-the-art computed tomography (CT) scanners, equipped with advanced AI detection algorithms, will allow passengers to keep laptops and liquids inside their hand luggage, cutting down queues and reducing stress at checkpoints.
“This deployment will significantly enhance both the security and efficiency of passenger screening processes at one of the world’s busiest airports,” said Jerome de Chassey, President of Smiths Detection.
A Game-Changer for Travellers
The new system will eliminate the need for manual unpacking of electronic devices and personal liquids, often cited as a key pain point for travellers. The move comes at a crucial time as the city continues to scale up its global aviation hub status.
“Our focus has always been on delivering a seamless passenger journey,” said Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports.
“This innovation will not only speed up security lanes but also raise the bar for safety and service.”
Smarter Tech, Greater Peace of Mind
The scanners deliver high-resolution 3D images of hand luggage contents, powered by AI algorithms that automatically detect threats in real time. The system is already approved by global regulators, including the TSA (USA) and ECAC (Europe), and is used in airports across Asia, Europe, and North America.
The rollout aligns with Dubai’s Smart Travel Vision, which aims to integrate AI, biometrics, and contactless services across the aviation ecosystem, paving the way for future-ready infrastructure at Dubai World Central (DWC) as well.
More Upgrades in the Pipeline
Beyond the new scanners, Dubai Airports is also investing in biometric immigration e-gates, smart lanes, and automated baggage systems to further streamline passenger flow.
According to DAEP, the new screening technology will be fully integrated within the coming months, gradually going live at all DXB terminals by the end of 2025.
What This Means for Passengers
- No need to remove laptops or liquids at security
- Faster security queues and smoother flow during peak hours
- Higher safety standards with 3D CT scans and AI-assisted detection
- Improved passenger experience ahead of Dubai’s major tourism and expo events
For now, passengers can look forward to a better check-in and security experience, making travel through DXB not only faster and smoother, but safer too.
