Abu Dhabi Police are ramping up efforts to tackle dangerous driving habits, sending a clear warning to motorists about behaviours that continue to cause serious accidents, many of them fatal.
The message was delivered during a recent community forum in Al Ain, themed “Safety and Prevention… A Community Responsibility.”
Officials spotlighted the growing concern over distracted driving, especially the use of mobile phones while behind the wheel, whether for social media, calls, or taking photos.
“Failing to pay attention on the road, especially during sudden hazards or mechanical issues, can have devastating consequences,” warned Lieutenant Colonel Nasser Abdullah Al Saadi, Head of Security Media at the Security Media Department.
Real-Life Footage Shows the Risks
As part of the “Path of Safety 2” awareness campaign, attendees viewed actual footage of road violations, including unsafe braking, tailgating, and distracted driving.
Safe Driving Rules For Motorists
Drivers were also reminded to:
- Give way to faster vehicles in overtaking lanes
- Stay in the right lane when driving at slower speeds
- Avoid overtaking from the right, a manoeuvre that poses a high risk of collisions
The forum stressed that traffic etiquette is not just courtesy, it’s critical to preventing crashes.
Keeping Pedestrians in Mind
Abu Dhabi authorities are actively upgrading infrastructure to protect foot traffic. This includes:
- New pedestrian bridges
- Improved crosswalks
- Signal-controlled crossings
- Strategic fencing to close unsafe gaps
