Dubai Police have urged motorists not to stop on the hard shoulder except in genuine emergencies, warning that the practice poses a major safety risk and can lead to deadly accidents.
The reminder comes after a fatal crash this morning on Sheikh Zayed Road, near the Arabian Ranches Bridge towards Abu Dhabi. A motorcyclist died after colliding with a truck that had stopped on the hard shoulder.
Brigadier Juma bin Suwaidan, Director of Dubai Police’s General Department of Traffic, said the truck had pulled over due to a technical fault, creating a hazard for other road users. The motorcyclist, unable to anticipate the stationary vehicle, swerved suddenly but crashed, suffering fatal injuries on the spot.
“Stopping on the hard shoulder without necessity is among the most dangerous traffic violations. The shoulder is strictly for emergencies such as sudden breakdowns or medical situations,” Brigadier bin Suwaidan said.
Dubai Police stressed that:
- Stopping on the shoulder unnecessarily is a serious offence that can cause severe accidents.
- Daily crashes are reported due to unsafe roadside stops.
- Motorists should always move to the nearest safe parking area if a vehicle develops a fault.
- Drivers must use hazard lights and warning triangles to alert oncoming traffic during emergencies.
Bin Suwaidan also highlighted other major causes of crashes, including speeding, failing to maintain safe distances, and distracted driving. He called on motorists to remain vigilant, respect speed limits, and check their vehicles before starting journeys.
“Dubai Police will continue to enforce strict penalties against dangerous violations that endanger lives. Protecting lives and property starts with full compliance with traffic laws,” he added.
