Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially raised the bar, after its latest distinctive vehicle number plate auction pulled in a record-breaking Dh109 million, the highest total ever since the auctions began.
The 120th open auction, held on December 27 at Al Joud Ballroom at Hilton Dubai Al Habtoor City, saw intense bidding and big-money moments as collectors and car enthusiasts competed for some of Dubai’s most sought-after plates.
Stealing the spotlight was BB12, which sold for a jaw-dropping Dh9.66 million, making it the most expensive plate of the night. Close behind was AA25, snapped up for just over Dh8 million, while BB30 fetched Dh6.74 million and CC100 went for Dh4.21 million.
In total, 90 premium plates featuring two- to five-digit numbers were up for grabs, spanning multiple letter categories, and demand was clearly sky-high.
According to the RTA, the record-breaking results highlight the continued popularity of exclusive number plates in Dubai, as well as the success of its transparent auction system, which allows equal access to bidders from all backgrounds.
The auction was held in Dubai with participants able to bid both in person and online, making it accessible to a wider pool of buyers. As with all RTA auctions, VAT was applied to all sales.
With figures like these, it’s clear that in Dubai, a number plate isn’t just a registration, it’s a serious status symbol.
