The UAE has marked a major national milestone, as leaders paid tribute to the country’s Armed Forces on the 50th anniversary of their unification, recognising their role in shaping the nation’s security and stability.

President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan praised the “courageous men and women” who continue to safeguard the country, describing their dedication as a source of pride for everyone who calls the UAE home.

In a message shared on X, he highlighted the significance of the anniversary as a defining moment in the country’s history, reflecting on five decades of service and commitment.

Cornerstone of national unity

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, also marked the occasion, praising the Armed Forces for their decades of service, sacrifice and national duty.

In a speech commemorating the 50th anniversary of unification, he highlighted the role of the Armed Forces in strengthening the UAE’s global standing and protecting its achievements.

He described them as an “impregnable fortress” that has safeguarded the nation’s pride, dignity and stability, while honouring the dedication of those who have served since unification in 1976.

“We gather today to celebrate the golden jubilee of the decision to unify the UAE Armed Forces,” he said, reflecting on a milestone that continues to shape the country’s security and unity.

Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and Chairman of the Presidential Court, described the Armed Forces as the nation’s “shield and backbone,” honouring generations who have contributed to protecting the country and its people.

Rulers of Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah also paid rich tributes to the Armed Forces.

Turning point

The unification of the Armed Forces in 1976 is widely seen as a turning point in the UAE’s development, helping strengthen national unity and build a coordinated defence system across the emirates.

The UAE has taken a major step towards launching passenger rail services, with the first station by Etihad Rail now completed in Fujairah.

The milestone highlights growing progress on the country’s national rail network, which is expected to transform how residents travel between emirates in the coming years.

The station was visited by His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Fujairah, alongside Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi and Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who reviewed construction progress and upcoming services.

Speedy inter-emirate travel

Once operational, Etihad Rail’s passenger network is expected to offer faster, more convenient travel across the UAE, providing an alternative to driving between cities.

For many residents, especially commuters and frequent inter-emirate travellers, the network could mean:

• Less reliance on cars
• More affordable long-distance transport options

• While full passenger schedules are yet to be confirmed, Etihad Rail has previously outlined key routes and estimated journey times across the UAE:
• Abu Dhabi to Dubai: Around 50 minutes
• Abu Dhabi to Fujairah: Around 100 minutes
• Dubai to Fujairah: Around 50 minutes
• Abu Dhabi to Sharjah: Around 70 minutes

Pedestrians in Abu Dhabi are being reminded to use designated bridges, tunnels and crossings to stay safe and help reduce road accidents, according to Abu Dhabi Police.

The advisory comes as part of GCC Traffic Week 2026, held under the theme “I Cross Safely,” which focuses on improving road safety awareness across the region.

Officials warned that crossing roads from undesignated areas remains a high-risk behaviour, putting both pedestrians and drivers in danger, especially on busy roads where vehicles may not be able to stop in time.

Authorities highlighted that the UAE’s road network includes well-equipped pedestrian bridges, tunnels and marked crossings, designed to ensure safe and smooth movement across major roads.
