Dubai motorists have something to smile about as phase one of the Hessa Street Development Project is now officially open, bringing wider roads, new bridges and smoother journeys along one of the city’s busiest routes.
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) confirmed that the first phase stretches 4.5km from Al Khail Road to Sheikh Zayed Road, and includes widening Hessa Street to four lanes in each direction. New bridges have also been introduced at key intersections to ease congestion and improve traffic flow.
The upgrade significantly improves movement for vehicles travelling from Al Khail Road towards Hessa Street and onwards to Sheikh Zayed Road, helping to reduce bottlenecks during peak hours.
Project 90% complete
RTA said overall completion of the project has now reached 90 per cent, with the remaining works, including road upgrades, bridges, intersection improvements and cycling tracks, scheduled to be finished in the second quarter of this year.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, said the Dh690 million project is a major infrastructure upgrade serving fast-growing residential areas, including Al Sufouh 2, Al Barsha, and Jumeirah Village Circle.
He added that the population in areas served by the project is expected to exceed 640,000 residents by 2030, making the improvements crucial for long-term mobility.
Traffic capacity doubled
Once fully completed, the Hessa Street Development Project will double traffic capacity, increasing it from 8,000 vehicles per hour to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
The project includes upgrades to four major intersections along Hessa Street, Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, Al Asayel Street and Al Khail Road, with wider bridges, additional lanes and new directional ramps designed to improve traffic flow.
One major milestone was the opening of the Hessa Street–Al Khail Road intersection at the end of 2024, featuring a two-lane directional ramp serving traffic heading north towards Sharjah.
Cycling and e-scooter tracks added
The development also supports sustainable transport, with 13.5km of dedicated cycling and e-scooter tracks being added along Hessa Street. The 4.5-metre-wide track links Al Sufouh and Dubai Hills, serving neighbourhoods such as Al Barsha and Barsha Heights.
The track connects directly with Dubai Internet City Metro Station and includes a dedicated bridge crossing Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, designed for cyclists, e-scooter users and pedestrians.
With phase one now open and final works nearing completion, the Hessa Street upgrade is set to make daily commutes across Dubai faster, safer and more efficient.
