The President of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has died on Friday, the state news agency WAM reported.
The time of his death is unclear yet, but the head of the Abu Dhabi emirate has been ailing for quite some time. He was 73.
In his absence, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the Crown Prince and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, has been leading the nation, along Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the UAE Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.
The Ministry of Presidential Affairs has mourned to the UAE people, Arab and Islamic nations and the world the death of Sheikh Khalifa. We “wish Allah Almighty grant him eternal peace and the UAE people patience and solace.” in a statement on WAM.
The ministry also announced that the UAE will observe a forty-day state mourning with the flag flown at half-mast starting today. Work will be suspended at all ministries, departments, and federal, local and private entities for three days.
