A new variable speed limit has officially come into force on one of Abu Dhabi’s busiest roads.
Starting Monday, October 27, the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) rolled out a variable speed system on Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street, allowing real-time changes to speed limits based on road and traffic conditions.
The move aims to improve traffic flow and enhance road safety, with digital signage now showing dynamic limits. Drivers should pay close attention, the limit could drop from 100km/h to 80km/h during:
- Adverse weather conditions
- Peak traffic hours
- Major events
- Ongoing roadworks
In a post on X, Abu Dhabi Mobility urged motorists to “adhere to the new system to ensure everyone’s safety.”
This update is part of a wider push to modernise road rules across the emirate. Earlier this year, Abu Dhabi introduced a Dh50,000 fine for red-light violations and scrapped the minimum speed rule on E311 (Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road), meaning drivers will no longer be penalised for travelling below 120km/h.
So, the next time you’re cruising through Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street, make sure to keep an eye on those digital signs; the speed limit might just change before you do.
