New York Warriors beat Texas Chargers to leapfrog over their opponents into the lead for the US Masters T10 league on Thursday. The Warriors registered their fourth victory of the competition when they trumped the Chargers outfit by a six-run margin at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium, Lauderhill, Florida.

Texas Chargers had to make way later for California Knights as well as Morrisville Unity, who won their matches on a busy penultimate day of the league stage. The day’s action saw teams playing additional games to compensate for the initial abandonments due to rain. The Knights secured a victory by five runs over Atlanta Riders. Morrisville rode on a brilliant all-round show from Corey Anderson, who top-scored with the bat (40 not out) and picked four wickets, to help his side register a 55-run win against New Jersey Triton’s.

New York Warriors put up 115/5 in their 10 overs before restricting Texas Chargers to 109/8. The latter went down fighting in chasing the tough target. Abdur Rehman got New York off to a great start as he dismissed both Mohammed Hafeez and Upul Tharanga in the first over of the chase.

Thereafter, Skipper Ben Dunk and Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera scored 16 and 19 runs respectively. Both of them showcased good form, but could not play a long innings as Texas were struggling at 71/7 in 6.2 overs. However, Phil Mustard and Sohail Tanvir produced a rearguard action that almost saw the Texas team pull off victory from the jaws of defeat. The action remained alive till the last ball when Texas required seven runs, but Tanvir got caught out at the long-on boundary, much to the relief of the New York side.

Earlier in the day, Texas won the toss and chose to bowl first. Tanvir picked up two wickets in the seventh over as New York were reduced to 58/5. Thereafter, captain Misbah Ul-Haq and Abdul Razzaq joined forces to smash 57 runs in the last 21 balls of the innings.

Razzaq produced an unbeaten knock of 35 runs from 14 balls that included 4 sixes and a boundary to take his team to 115/5 in their 10 overs.

Brief scores: New York Warriors 115/5 (Abdul Razzaq 35*, Shahid Afridi 18, Sohail Tanvir 2/14) beat Texas Chargers 109/8 (Phil Mustard 21*, Thisara Perera 19, Abdur Rehman 3/29) by 6 runs.

Irfan Pathan denies Atlanta Riders in win for California Knights

California Knights prevailed over Atlanta Riders in a final-over drama with Irfan Pathan rolling back the clock with his accurate bowling in the US Masters T10 League in Florida.

Atlanta needed nine runs off the last over against California Knights, but former India left-arm fast bowler Irfan Pathan conceded just three runs as California won by five runs at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium. The California Knights posted 94/2 in their 10 overs before restricting the Atlanta Riders to 89/4.

Robin Uthappa got Atlanta Riders off to a great start with two boundaries and a six. However, he was dismissed by Peter Siddle for 16 runs off nine balls in the second over. Thereafter, Lendl Simmons and Dwayne Smith strung a 47-run partnership to take the Riders’s score to 66/2 in 7.3 overs.

Hamilton Masakadza put the Riders in the driver’s seat with two fours and a six off Ben Laughlin’s bowling in the ninth over. But Pathan put his hand up and saved the day for the Knights.

California chose to bat first after winning the toss. Amila Aponso dismissed Aaron Finch (2) in the second over. However, Milind Kumar upped the ante with a four and a six in the same over. Jacques Kallis also joined the party as he smashed three boundaries off Kamrul Islam in the third over.

Rovman Powell produced a blistering unbeaten 96 to steer the Dubai Capitals to a commanding 83-run victory over the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the DP World ILT20 Season 4 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

After being asked to bat, the Capitals recovered from early setbacks to post 186/4, thanks to a dominant 119-run stand between Powell (96 off 52) and Jordan Cox (52). Powell exploded at the death, smashing two sixes and two fours in the final over, while Cox provided the perfect support through the middle overs.

In reply, the Knight Riders collapsed for 103 in 15.3 overs. David Willey struck twice in the first over, Mustafizur Rahman ripped through the top order, and Waqar Salamkheil claimed a four-wicket haul as the Capitals sealed their second-biggest win by runs in the tournament.

Phil Salt top-scored with 27, but resistance was brief as regular wickets kept the Knight Riders chasing the game. Mohammed Nabi and Salamkheil applied the squeeze in the middle, leaving the visitors with too much to do.

Earlier, despite dropped chances, the Capitals lost quick wickets in the powerplay before Powell and Cox took control. Powell later credited his approach against Sunil Narine and Piyush Chawla for setting up the win, while Knight Riders skipper Jason Holder admitted his side fell short in all three departments.

The victory marks the Capitals’ first win of the season and continues their strong record against the Knight Riders.

Gulf Giants snap losing streak with dominant six-wicket win over MI Emirates

The Gulf Giants opened their DP World ILT20 Season 4 campaign in emphatic fashion, cruising to a six-wicket victory over MI Emirates to end a six-match losing run at the Dubai International Stadium. A blistering 81 off 42 balls from Pathum Nissanka and a powerful all-round outing from Azmatullah Omarzai set the tone for a clinical performance.

Despite a 78-run stand between Nicholas Pooran (46 off 39) and Kieron Pollard (50 off 33), MI Emirates struggled to build momentum. Omarzai and Nuwan Thushara struck early and often, each taking two wickets as the Emirates’ batters laboured. Four of the five MI bowlers later conceded more than 10 runs an over during the chase.

Nissanka stands tall, Omarzai finishes the job

Chasing 164, Chris Woakes briefly threatened to derail the Giants’ start with the wickets of Rahmanullah Gurbaz (6) and Gerhard Erasmus (1). But Nissanka and Moeen Ali (26 off 21) steadied the reply, guiding the side to 67 before Moeen was run out.

After a measured start, Nissanka accelerated superbly, reaching fifty in 30 balls with three fours and two sixes. The chase turned decisively in the Giants’ favour when Omarzai (39 off 16) launched a ruthless assault on Rashid Khan, smashing four and three sixes in a 23-run over.

Nissanka continued the onslaught with three boundaries and a six off Woakes before falling in the 15th over, but Omarzai saw the Giants home comfortably in 14.4 overs.

Early blows derail MI Emirates

Put in to bat, MI Emirates slumped to 36/3 inside the powerplay. Thushara removed Mohammed Waseem (1) and Jonny Bairstow (11), both caught and bowled, while Omarzai castled Tom Banton (6) in the third over.

Pooran and Tajinder Singh (15) attempted to stabilise the innings with a 27-run partnership, but Moeen Ali’s clever spin accounted for Singh at 58/4.

Pollard injected life into the innings in the 13th over, hammering three sixes off Tabraiz Shamsi. Pooran then joined the counterattack with a 14-run burst off Haider Razzaq as the pair added 50 off 36 balls. Pooran fell attempting another big hit in the 18th over, and Pollard followed in the final over to Omarzai. Cameos from Romario Shepherd (18 off 6) and Rashid Khan (6 off 1) dragged MI Emirates to 163/6.

Reaction

Moeen Ali, Gulf Giants stand-in captain:
“Great performance. The toss was huge. We bowled very well in the first 10 overs. They have three players who can take it away, and we held them back nicely. Nissanka and Omarzai were incredible. Nissanka is one of the best in the world, very calm, doesn’t say much, but packs a punch. Omarzai gave us the momentum by taking on Rashid Khan.”

Kieron Pollard, MI Emirates captain:
“Losing three wickets in the powerplay hurt us. The ball was moving around in the first 10 overs, and we couldn’t finish as well as we wanted. We just need to be better with our execution.”
